Man quizzed over Briton's holiday isle death
Detectives were today continuing to question a 36-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering a woman who vanished while on holiday in the Canary Islands.
The suspect, from Ipswich, was arrested late on Tuesday after the discovery of a woman's body on Gran Canaria, police said.
Suffolk police said the man was being held at Ipswich police station after being arrested on suspicion of murdering 23-year-old Sarah Shields and perverting the course of justice.
"Sarah Shields was on a two-week holiday in Gran Canaria but was reported missing when she failed to return home on Sunday 11 July as planned," said a spokeswoman.
"The body of a young woman was discovered on the island on 7 July and Spanish police are currently attempting to identify her."
Police said magistrates had given permission for detectives to hold the suspect until early Friday.
