A British teenager has been found dead in a swimming pool in Ibiza.

The 19-year-old, who was believed to have been on holiday on the Spanish island, was pulled from the pool at a private villa in the early hours of the morning, it is understood.

Emergency services crews called to the villa just after 3am tried to revive the man by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation but could do nothing to save him.

The villa, in Sant Josep in the south-west of the island, is a short drive from the holiday resort of Playa d'en Bossa, a favourite with British tourists.

It is thought to be a property rented to holidaymakers during the summer.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are providing assistance to the family of a British man who died on 8 July in Ibiza, and are in contact with the Spanish authorities."

A post-mortem examination will be held to establish whether the man was intoxicated, according to the Diario de Ibiza news website.

The man's identity has yet to be made public.
