The leader of the coup that ousted President Jean-Bernard Aristide from power has agreed to a United Nations plan to restore democracy in Haiti, a spokesman for the military said yesterday, Reuter reports from New York.
A spokesman for General Raoul Cedras, who led the 1991 coup, said that except for a few details 'our conclusion is that it is acceptable'. Dante Caputo, the UN mediator, has been negotiating with Fr Aristide and Gen Cedras since Sunday, in an effort to pave the way for the President's return to Haiti by 30 October. Fr Aristide's associates have said they thought the plan was positive but they have not given any official reply to indicate their acceptance.
