Fire-fighters battling a blaze on the largest of Ecuador's Galapagos islands said yesterday they could save 40 rare giant tortoises in a colony about 1 mile (1.6 km) from the flames, but were uncertain about the fate of thousands more, Reuter reports from Quito.
