Three armed robbers pulled up alongside a courier boat in a Venice lagoon and seized nearly €1.3m (£1.1m) in cash on Monday.

An armoured van had just delivered three cases of money to the boat to be delivered to banks and post offices, the Italian news agency Ansa reported.

Just after the courier vessel left the dock, the robbers’ boat pulled alongside. The raiders took two cases containing banknotes, but left behind the third one, which was filled with coins.
