Spain's Interior Minister, Jose Luis Corcuera, an old friend and confidant of Felipe Gonzalez, confirmed yesterday that the Prime Minister had accepted his resignation, Phil Davison reports from Madrid.

Mr Corcuera had pinned his post and reputation to a controversial law allowing police carte blanche to enter homes without a warrant in suspected drugs cases. But the Constitutional Court rejected the law's key clauses last week, saying they infringed citizens' rights.
