Peking (Reuter) - China has quietly replaced the hardline Culture Minister with an engineer and propaganda chief. There has been no announcement that He Jingzhi has been replaced as acting Minister of Culture, but the official weekly Literature and Art said a meeting had been attended by 'acting Minister of Culture Liu Zhongde'.
He Jingzhi fell out of favour because he did not endorse economic reform. A number of others have fallen for the same reason: Chen Xitong, the Mayor of Peking, replaced Li Ximing as the top party official in the city and Gao Di, director of the People's Daily, was replaced by Shao Huaze, the paper's editor-in-chief.
