From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A British man has been bailed in Tenerife as investigations continue into the violent death of his child's mother.

Leighton Richardson was arrested on Christmas Eve after his ex-girlfriend, Lisa McConway, 28, was found at her flat in the holiday resort of Playa de las Americas.

Miss McConway, from Blackrock, County Dublin, Ireland, was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.

Sources confirmed that Richardson, 29, from Mold, north Wales, was arrested, taken before a court and bailed.

He has been ordered to report daily to the south coast court at Arona, where the judge in charge of the case is based.

Before granting "provisional liberty" - the Spanish term for bail - the judge studied police reports of the investigation.

The North Wales Daily Post reported that a post-mortem examination showed Miss McConway could have died from a beating or a fall.

Although her injuries were consistent with an attack, she suffered from a blood-clotting condition which could cause extensive bruising if she fell, it was reported.

A Foreign Office spokesman confirmed that a British national had been arrested in Tenerife.

Miss McConway moved to Tenerife in 2001 and did not intend to stay.

She and Richardson had a son, Shea, aged three, who was living with his mother.
