At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. John Sharp, 31, was discovered in the ocean near the Playa d’en Bossa party resort on Saturday morning.
He had taken a cocktail of speed, cocaine and ecstasy and had drunk heavily, according to the post mortem results.
Police believe he died at least 24 hours before his body was found in the water, reports say. It took detectives several days to establish his identity as he was wearing only swimming trunks
His parents are said to have arrived on the Spanish island to formally identify him.
The island has long been a draw for clubbers, with the bars and clubs of Playa d’en Bossa proving particularly popular with tourists in the peak season.
