A leading Italian newspaper left its front page blank yesterday in protest at a law curbing police wiretaps and imposing fines for news organisations that publish transcripts.
The law, which got a confidence vote in the Senate on Thursday, is also contested by magistrates who say it will hamper the fight against corruption and organised crime. La Repubblica ran a front page on which seemed to be stuck only a yellow note reading: "The gagging law will deny citizens the right to be informed".
