The city of La Coruna is swathed in a column of black smoke after a Greek oil tanker broke in two and caught fire after it ran aground in heavy seas just outside the Spanish port. The Aegean Sea spilt some of its 79,300 tons of crude oil, creating a slick 2km long. All the tanker's crew were rescued and only one crewman and two rescuers were reported to have suffered slight injuries. Konstadinos Stavridis, the Greek captain, was being held for questioning last night by Spanish police.
