LUSAKA (AP) - A judge in Malawi granted bail yesterday to a pro-democracy leader arrested three months ago and accused of sedition.
Chakufwa Chihana, chairman of a Malawi opposition group, was arrested on 6 April after returning from a conference in Zambia at which he called for a pro-democracy congress in Malawi. Political opposition is outlawed in Malawi, a one-party state. Mr Chihana had been jailed without charges, and the judge twice postponed decisions on his case. The first delay in May touched off anti-government riots that killed 22 people.
