DUSSELDORF (AP) - Police in Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey have arrested 27 people and confiscated nearly 342kg (752lb) of heroin, police said.
Horst Durkowyak, head of the North-Rhine Westphalia state criminal drug office, said the confiscated heroin had a street value of DM30m ( pounds 10.6m) and that the smuggling ring had been 'uncovered from top to bottom'. The gang was headed by a 50-year-old Turk in Istanbul.
The heroin came from Iran, Iraq and Anatolia, and was smuggled into Germany in trucks that came via Czechoslovakia. Investigators estimate the group had smuggled up to 200kg of heroin a month into Germany and the Netherlands.
