Thirteen Islamic militants were executed in Algeria, the largest number of executions carried out at once since the government began its crackdown on fundamentalist opponents almost two years ago, AP reports from Algiers. Six other Muslims sentenced to death were granted presidential pardons. The 19 were convicted in February and March by secret courts set up to try terrorist and subversion cases. The latest executions came a day after armed men murdered a medical professor, Djillali Belkhenchir, in his consulting room.
