BRUSSELS (AFP) - European forests are continuing to deteriorate, mainly because of acid rain, the European Commission said yesterday. The Commission's annual forest damage survey showed that more than one in every five trees was damaged. Some 83,000 trees were tested.

'The report shows that there is an overall tendency towards a worsening of the forest condition in Europe,' it said.

The Commission said coniferous forests were suffering the worst damage in Germany, Britain, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and Poland. Deciduous damage was worst among Danish beeches, Swedish birches and Portuguese oaks.
