Democrat leader is new Thai PM

BANGKOk (AFP) - Chuan Leekpai the leader of Thailand's Democrat Party, was appointed the country's prime minister yesterday, it was announced by royal decree.

His nomination was approved by the Thai constitutional monarch, Bhumibol Adulyadej, 10 days after the Democrat Party won the most seats in general elections. A total of 216 of the 360 members of the House of Representatives supported Mr Chuan's nomination, the House Speaker, Marut Bunnag, said.

The new Thai government is expected to be formed by the end of this week and is to include members from a five-party coalition. The coalition commands 207 seats in the house.
