San Francisco - A federal appeals court, upholding a lower court decision, has ruled that use of the gas chamber in California executions violates a constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment. "This decision is the death knell for the gas chamber in the United States," predicted Michael Laurence, an attorney who fought to stop the use of the gas chamber. Reuter
