President Bill Clinton yesterday promised Israel military and economic aid, to include US help in meeting the dollars 250m ( pounds 166m) bill for the redeployment of Israeli forces leaving Gaza and Jericho in a month, writes Patrick Cockburn from Washington.
After a meeting with Israel's Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, at the White House Mr Clinton confirmed that the US would be supplying Israel with new combat aircraft. Israel wants the F-15E aircraft and sophisticated electronics and military computers. Mr Clinton's gesture was seen as an attempt to keep the Middle East peace talks on track.
