Washington - President Bill Clinton yesterday accepted the proposal of an independent commission that recommended closing or realigning 132 domestic military bases. The plan becomes law unless both chambers of Congress vote within 45 days to reject it.
More than 90,000 civilian jobs are affected and two installations in California and Texas are due to close. California is a key state in Mr Clinton's hopes for a second term because it holds one-fifth of the votes necessary to win the presidency. Reuter
