The Brazilian army staged a show of force against striking police, landing helicopter-borne troops at the presidential palace, Reuter reports from Brasilia. President Itamar Franco ordered about 1,600 soldiers to ring Federal Police headquarters in Brasilia and Sao Paulo to guard against attacks by striking officers seeking pay raises.
