The "obese" centenarian was found floating upside down in the pool of the Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali Shrine in Sadar Upazila south-western Bangladesh last week. It had gorged itself on goats and chickens thrown to it by worshippers; they believed the offerings would give them good luck.
"We were aware of the problem but were not sure what to do about it. The legend is that anybody who feeds the hunger of the crocodiles will have their heart's desire fulfilled," said shrine manager Mohammed Sarwar.
"Usually it was just a chicken but more recently people have been offering even more, including goats, believing that big sacrifices meant more chance of a wish being granted."
This is the fourth crocodile in years times to have died at Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali Shrine.
According to local residents, four years ago there were as many as four crocodiles in the pool but the three other animals had also died due to overeating.
