Two young girls have died after eating poisoned yoghurt allegedly placed outside their nursery by the head teacher of a rival school in China.

According to the Xinhua New Agency, the female head confessed to injecting the yoghurt with rat poison and asking a man to place it with notebooks on the road next to the nursery in Pingshan county in Hebei province.

The girls' grandmother found the books and yoghurt and took them home. After drinking the yoghurt the girls suffered convulsions and later died.

Police have detained the woman and the man, and reportedly believe the poisoning was motivated by competition for pupils.
