Pakistani security officials gathered in Karachi yesterday to destroy seized bottles of alcohol during a ceremony to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Pakistan has more than 4 million drug addicts in a population of 176 million, according to the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), responsible for investigating and prosecuting drug offences.

The Pakistan-Afghanistan border is a major source of illicit opium, as well as being a stronghold for the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, and has been branded by President Barack Obama as the most dangerous place in the world for Americans.
