A teenager has been arrested in India after allegedly throwing acid in her boyfriend’s face because, he says, he refused to marry her.

But the young woman, who has not been named, told police she only carried out the attack after her partner threatened to post intimate pictures of her online if she herself did not agree to a wedding.

The victim suffered a damaged eye and is still undergoing treatment following the attack in the city of Aligarh in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The attack reportedly took place at a shop.

In a police report seen by the Times of India, the victim’s mother said the 19-year-old had been left heartbroken when her son broke the relationship off last month.

The teenager had taken to calling the family home repeatedly, she said.

But the young woman herself is understood to have police she had ended the relationship, leading to her being blackmailed.
