A cleaning employee trapped inside an elevator in New York City over the weekend has been sent to the hospital after being discovered on Monday morning.

The owners of the apartment called authorities immediately after arriving to the building after a weekend away and learning of the faulty elevator, officials said.

The apartment is owned by billionaire investment banker Warren Stephens and his wife, the New York Times reported.

Witnesses who saw the woman being carried out on a stretcher on Monday described the cleaning employee as appearing “calm” and “conscious.” A fire department spokesperson said she was taken to the hospital in “good condition.”

Firefighters arrived to the Upper East Side apartment complex shortly after 10.am on Monday morning, where witnesses said they were forced to pry open the doors to the elevator.

The elevator in the five-story building was shutdown after firefighters worked to rescue the woman, who had reportedly been trapped since Friday night. It wasn’t clear if she endured any injuries throughout the ordeal.

Mr Stephens is one of the richest people in the country with a reported net worth of nearly $2.7bn and a ranking of 302 on the Forbes list of the 400 wealthiest Americans.

The woman’s identity was not released, though she is reported to be 53-years-old. The New York Police Department did not immediately respond to enquiries.

She reportedly found herself stuck on Friday night between the second and third floors of the building.

Authorities said she did not have a phone on her at the time of the incident and was unable to contact anyone for help throughout the weekend.

The New York City Department of Buildings is investigating the issues behind the faulty elevator.
