The victim fought off Dennis Slaton, 61, before stabbing him and fleeing into the street naked and covered in blood, police in South Carolina have said.
Slaton, a registered sex offender with multiple previous convictions, was later charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping.
He allegedly abducted the woman in the city of Greenville after stopping at a petrol station to give her a lift on 8 August.
Instead of dropping the woman off at the street she requested, he threatened her with a knife and took her to his home, according to a report filed by Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.
After forcing the woman into his house, he sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill her, said the report, seen by the Greenville News.
But the victim fought off Slaton, severing his penis, and used his knife to stab him in the buttocks before fleeing his house.
The crime report did not say how Slaton’s penis was severed, but against the advice of his attorney, Slaton spoke to various media outlets and told local television station 7News the woman had bitten it off.
“It was pretty bad, pretty tragic, what happened to me,” he claimed in a separate comment to the Greenville News, declining the discuss the incident further.
Jacqueline Fair, who lives across the road from Slaton, told the newspaper the woman he allegedly attacked had banged desperately on her front door on the night of the alleged kidnapping and assault.
“I didn’t open the door because you never know what’s going on with that kind of stuff,” she said. ”She was saying, ‘Help me, help me, help me,’ and I said, ‘No, honey, we need to call the police.’”
She added the woman “was scared” and “you could tell something happened to her because she was trying to get away to get help”.
Police said the woman had continued running down the road knocking on doors before reaching a Waffle House half a mile away, where staff gave her clothes and called 911.
Slaton was found at home covered in blood, according to the crime report. He was taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery.
He was later arrested and charged, and has since been released on bail.
Slaton has reportedly been registered as a sex offender since 1989, and has convictions for voyeurism, aggravated sodomy and attempted rape.
