The man led police on a high-speed chase before embarking on a stand off that lasted for an hour. The entire event was caught by by television cameras, including the moment when the man was shot by officers.
Reports said police had stopped 26-year-old Hector Javier Puga's car on Friday afternoon and wanted to speak to him in relationship to an allegation of kidnapping.

But police say Mr Puga took off in what police said was a stolen SUV, swerving his way through busy streets for about half an hour. His journey was followed helicopters employed by news channels.
He stopped on a residential street around 5:30 p.m. and approached deputies, waving a gun and yelling.

He appeared to shoot in the direction of police, who returned fire. Mr Puga was later taken to a local hospital where his condition was said to be stable.
