Your support makes all the difference.US newspapers reacted to the historic second impeachment of Donald Trump on Thursday morning.
On Wednesday afternoon, the House voted to impeach President Trump for the second time, after representatives also voted for the measure in 2019 related to his dealings with Ukraine. He was acquitted by the Senate on the first charge in early 2020.
Impeachment proceedings were started after a mob of pro-Trump rioters breached the Capitol building on Wednesday 6 January, which was incited by Mr Trump at a rally he held nearby. Five people died as numerous others were injured in the riots.
President Trump incited the riot by urging his supporters in the crowd to “walk down to the Capitol”, adding: “You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.”
In the morning after the historic vote, US newspapers almost universally led with the president’s second impeachment, with The New York Times headline simply: “IMPEACHED”.
The Times subheading read: “Trump, after inciting rampage in Capitol, is first US president to face 2nd Senate trial”, as an image of National Guard troops sleeping in the Capitol was chosen for the front page.
The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Newsday and the Houston Chronicle all led with “Trump Impeached Again”, while the Chicago Tribune decided on “Impeached again”.
Most US papers led with an image of House speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, signing the articles of impeachment against Mr Trump, or a picture of her presiding over the proceedings on Wednesday afternoon.
The Los Angeles Times led with “Trump Impeached For a Second Time”, and highlighted in its subheading that “10 Republicans join rebuke on charge of ‘incitement of insurrection”.
The Seattle Times also focused on the 10 Republican representatives who voted for impeachment.
The New York Post, which has published favourable coverage of Mr Trump throughout his time in office, instead focused on the National Guard troops stationed in the Capitol, going with the headline: “BUNKER HILL.”
Despite the near universal focus in the US, coverage of the president’s impeachment did not lead in the majority of UK newspapers on Thursday morning, but was a focus for The i and The Independent.
The i went for “Impeached Again” for its headline and used an image of Ms Pelosi on its front page, while The Independent led with a picture of National Guard troops sleeping alongside the headline: “Troops came out at the Capitol as the House votes to impeach Trump again.”
Die Welt in Germany led with an image of troops sleeping in the Capitol and focused on Mr Trump’s impeachment on Thursday, while France’s Le Monde led on the historic nature of him becoming the first US president to be impeached twice.
