The loss of his favoured candidate in Alabama’s Senate primary runoff reportedly left Donald Trump feeling “embarrassed and pissed”.

Firebrand jurist Roy Moore handily beat Senator Luther Strange in the Republican race – a blow to the party’s establishment and Mr Trump.

After the election was called for Mr Moore, Mr Trump is said to have angrily vented at his political team and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who had encouraged the President to endorse Mr Strange, CNN reported.

A White House aide told the news outlet that Mr Trump “knew it was a mistake but one he was willing to make because Luther was loyal.”

Meanwhile, the President’s ex-chief strategist, Steve Bannon, had backed Mr Moore, waging a war on the Republican establishment.

The Breitbart executive told a crowd the night before the vote: “We did not come here to defy Donald Trump. We came here to praise and honour him.”

He continued: “We believe in America first, and conservatism because we oppose progressives and everything they stand for.”

With 100 per cent of precincts reporting, Mr Moore had 54.6 per cent of the vote to Mr Strange's 45.4 per cent, according to the Alabama Secretary of State's office.

Mr Trump went to bed “embarrassed and pissed” following Mr Strange’s election loss, CNN reported.

The President has said he doesn’t like losers.

On Wednesday, Mr Trump praised Mr Moore.

“I'm very happy with him, and I have to say Luther came a long way from the time I endorsed him and he ran a good race, but Roy ran a really great race,” the President told reporters on the White House South Lawn.
