Donald Trump Jr was booed by a TV audience after he blamed testimony at the impeachment inquiry against his father on pressure from the “vicious left”.
Appearing ABC’s The View, alongside his partner Kimberly Guilfoyle – a former TV host who now serves as a campaign adviser to his father – he was asked about testimony from Gordon Sondland, the former American ambassador to the European Union.
Mr Sondland has recently revised his testimony to the congressional investigation, saying he remembered telling a Ukrainian official that US military aid “likely” hinged on a political inquiry into Joe Biden and his son that was sought by Mr Trump.
He had previously denied any politically motivated aid freeze and the US president, has also rejected the accusation that he threatened to withhold $400m Ukraine unless it opened up a probe.
Mr Trump Jr said “Well I don’t know why he changed his testimony – it’s sort of interesting”
When host Joy Behar suggested that Mr Sondland had changed his mind because he feared criminal prosecution, Mr Trump Jr said it was because “he’s afraid of being attacked like so many of us have for so long by a vicious left”.
It was at this point that the audience roared its opposition and some of them started to boo.
Mr Trump Jr also rebutted concerns over his naming of the whistle-blower who sparked impeachment proceedings.
He went on to attack ABC which broadcasts The View, claiming it “worked with CBS to out a whistle-blower who had come up with a story” on billionaire paedophile Jeffery Epstein.
Challenged about his father’s rhetoric, he accused host Joy Behar of wearing blackface and Whoopi Goldberg of being an apologist for Roman Polanski.
In a 2016 airing of the show Ms Behar admitted to wearing makeup “that was a little darker than my skin” for a costume.
In 2009 as a guest on The View, Ms Goldberg commented on the then-arrest of Polanski in Switzerland for a number of charges including rape by use of drugs relating to a 13-year-old girl, saying “I know it wasn’t rape-rape. It was something else but I don’t believe it was rape-rape”.
While there may have been consternation in the studio, right wing groups were quick to praise the eldest son of the President while invoking his book, ‘Triggered: How the left thrives on hate and wants to silence us’.
After appearing on the show Ms Guilfoyle tweeted: “We had the ladies of The View absolutely TRIGGERED! Hah! Proud to stand with Donald Trump Jr, Donald Trump, and the entire Trump family. America loves the Trumps!” adding “#KAG2020” – for Keep America Great.”
