From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Former President Donald Trump appeared to reference the infamous Access Hollywood tape which was published late in the 2016 campaign in which he said he could grab women by their genitals because of his fame.

Discussing Elon Musk’s and SpaceX’s rocket boosters, Trump said, “And those two big arms, you saw the arms, they grab that thing like you grab your beautiful baby ... Years ago, I would have said something else, but I’ve learned.”

He added: “I would have been a little bit more risque.”

The ex-commander-in-chief made similar comments over the weekend.

Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump are making their final pitches to voters on Monday, the last full day of campaigning before Election Day.

The vice president will be joined by celebrities Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey, Ricky Martin, and The Roots in Philadelphia this evening as Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera support her in Pittsburgh and Las Vegas.

Trump, meanwhile, is also concentrating on the pivotal swing state of Pennsylvania, delivering rallies in Reading and Pittsburgh before closing in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Trump arrives at Pennsylvania rally

Trump has arrived at the Pennsylvania rally.

He is currently talking about voter fraud and he claims the election should be over by 9pm on Election Day.

“You ought to have the election over by nine o’clock,” Trump said. “I’m hearing now they’re going to take weeks, and you imagine they spend all this money, all this money on machines, and they’re going to say we may take an extra 12 days...”

It is not unusual for the count to take days, even weeks if the results are close.

Read our guide on when we can expect the results below.

The election’s biggest climate battles

While this year’s presidential election may not have as much of a focus on climate change as many wish it would, voters can still make a difference when they head to the polls.

Across the US, there are 159 statewide ballot measures in 41 states, according to Ballotpedia. Only a handful of those deal with environmental issues and just a couple are specifically related to climate change.

Unsurprisingly, these measures are on the ballot in states threatened this year by extreme climate events. Earth had its hottest summer on record, bringing historic temperatures across multiple regions.

Julia Musto reports.
