From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Saturday Night Live (SNL) mocked Rudy Giuliani in its opening sketch, as it focused on his attempts to overturn 3 November’s election result for President Donald Trump.

The opening sketch of Saturday’s show featured cast member Kate McKinnon playing Mr Giuliani at a hearing with state senators in Michigan, discussing the attorney’s baseless claims of voter fraud in last month’s election.

“This election was stolen from the American people with a level of trickery not seen since Houdini,” McKinnon’s Giuliani told state senators, before he then appeared to break wind. “That wasn't me. That was you guys,” he added.

During a hearing in Michigan last week, Mr Giuliani caused a stir on Twitter after he appeared to fart when being questioned about Mr Trump’s claims of voter fraud, according to Business Insider.

It was the latest viral moment from President Trump’s personal lawyer, who has made more headlines at voter fraud hearings by making personal gaffes than through providing any evidence.

Although President-elect Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election last month, Mr Trump has yet to concede, despite officially launching the transition process.

The president and his campaign team, led by Mr Giuliani, have filed around 40 unsuccessful lawsuits in battleground states that Mr Biden won. The Trump team has so far provided no definitive evidence of any voting irregularities.

In the sketch on Saturday, McKinnon’s Giuliani said: “You want evidence? Okay, well, today I brought before you a dozen highly intelligent, barely intoxicated individuals who are all eye witnesses.”

He then introduced Cecily Strong playing Melissa Carone, an IT contractor for Dominion Voting Systems on election day, who went viral last week after viewers compared her widely mocked appearance at the hearing in Lansing, Michigan to an SNL character.

Both Strong's Carone and McKinnon’s Giuliani were drinking alcohol throughout the sketch.

“I swear to tell my whole story, and nothing but my story so help me God,” Ms Strong's Carone character said, before adding that she saw thousands of dead people voting in Michigan on election day.

“Did you check every poll? Did you talk to all the dead people?” Ms Strong's Carone asked. “I'm not lying. I signed an After David,” she added.

“Could everyone please stop drinking during the hearing?” the hearing chair then asked. “I would love to, but if I don’t drink a scotch every 15 minutes, I explode,” McKinnon’s Giuliani replied.

After other guests, including one who claimed to have “ate ballots”, joined the hearing, Ms Strong's Carone complained that Dominion had not provided her with cheesy bread.

“I think you're confusing Dominion with Dominos,” one of the state senators replied. “Either way, my vote took longer than 30 minutes so it's supposed to be free,” Ms Strong's Carone added.

McKinnon’s Giuliani then ended SNL’s opening sketch by reiterating that he will not give up the fight to overturn the election result and referenced his now infamous press conference at Four Seasons Total Landscaping in Pennsylvania.

“In conclusion, I would say the defence rests, but we will never rest. Not until this election is overturned, or I get a full pardon and $10m (£10.4m) in cash.

“And if you liked what you saw here today, we're giving a press conference right after this at the Ritz-Carlton ... Plumbing and Heating Supply Company.”
