Author of explosive Donald Trump book walks away from interview

The author of an explosive book about President Donald Trump‘s first year in office walked out of an Australian TV interview about claims the US President was having an affair, claiming he could not hear the questions.

Michael Wolff, who published Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, was being interviewed by Ben Fordham on the Today show on a range of topics such as North Korea and gun control.

However, Mr Wolff claimed to be beset by technical problems when questioned turned to his claim Mr Trump was having an affair.

Mr Fordham later uploaded video of the interview to Twitter along with audio he said Mr Wolff was hearing in his earpiece.

“You said during a TV interview last month that you are absolutely sure that Donald Trump is currently having an affair, while President, behind the back of the First Lady,” Mr Fordham said.

“I repeat, you said you were absolutely sure.”

Mr Wolff said he could no longer hear the interviewer: “Hold on, yeah, I can’t.”

Mr Fordham continued: “Just last week, however, you backflipped and said, I quote, ‘I do not know if the President is having an affair’. Do you owe the President and the First Lady an apology, Mr Wolff?”

But Mr Wolff responded: “I can’t hear you. Hello?”

The host persisted: “Just last month you said you were absolutely sure that the President was having an affair and now you say he is not.”

Mr Wolff interrupted him, first saying “I’m not getting anything.”

When Mr Fordham asked if the journalist was hearing him, Mr Wolff touched his ear and appeared to begin to say no, then said: “I’m not getting anything. No.”

The host said “we were hearing each other well just before,” as Mr Wolff took his ear piece out and again said “I’m not hearing anything.”

He then walked away from the interview.

Last weekend, Mr Wolff called Tony Blair a “complete liar” for denying his claim the former Prime Minister sought a job at the White House.

During an interview on BBC One’s The Andrew Marr Show, he said: “I sat in the White House on the couch listening, I wasn’t supposed to overhear this, but they were standing right there, with Tony Blair and Jared Kushner standing not 15 feet in front of me with Tony Blair, let me choose my words carefully, sucking up to Jared Kushner.”

When he was asked about Mr Blair’s comment labelling the story a “complete fabrication”, Mr Wolff said: “Tony Blair is a complete liar.”
