Despite the impending deadline on the Covid relief bill, a potential looming government shutdown, and the ongoing surge in coronavirus cases, Donald Trump still found time to lash out at fashion and lifestyle magazines.

Their crime? Not featuring first lady Melania Trump on their covers during the administration’s four years in office.

In a Christmas Day tweet, the president referred to the first lady as “the greatest of all time” and lambasted the fashion press as “fake news”.

He retweeted a Breitbart News post that said: “The elitist snobs in the fashion press have kept the most elegant First Lady in American history off the covers of their magazines for 4 consecutive years.”

It linked to an article by the outlet reviewing the first lady’s outfit for the couple’s departure from the White House for their Christmas break at Mar-a-Lago.

As a former model, Ms Trump has appeared on magazine covers in the past, including on the cover of Vogue, following her marriage to Mr Trump, but before she was first lady.

Michelle Obama, however, was on at least 12 different magazine covers during her eight years in the White House.

The president moaning about the lack of adulation for his wife comes as many Americans experienced a lean holiday season, with millions facing the potential loss of unemployment insurance.

There was little sympathy for the president’s complaint and much questioning of his priorities.

Others were quick to point out that the boots Ms Trump wore that were the focus of the Breitbart article cost in excess of $2,000 — the amount the president would like Congress to make individual stimulus checks.
