From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Marco Rubio has been endorsed by “the strongest advocate for life in the Senate” as he shores up votes by hardening his stance against abortion.
Deb Fischer, the Senator of Nebraska, has endorsed the Republican candidate. She is known as a loud voice for the pro-life movement.
Republican Mr Rubio made worrying comments in the run-up to the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday night, saying he would rather lose the White House election than compromise on abortion.
The 44-year-old Florida senator added that he would not make exceptions on the issue for either rape or incest, and only supported abortion if a woman’s life was in danger.
Now he has the support of Senator Fischer behind him, who recently spoke out against abortion at the Walk For Life campaign. She is also a rancher and says on her Twitter profile that she is looking to bring "some common sense to Washington".
“Marco is entirely correct in what he said during that debate. President Obama came in with is agenda, his way, he has not reached out, he has not tried to build consensus,” she said to Fox News.
“No one knows these threats better. […] He will keep us safe, he will keep our country safe, he will keep our families safe,” she added.
Ms Fischer, who serves on the armed services committee and chairs the sub-committee on emerging threats, said Mr Rubio, who lost out to Ted Cruz at the Iowa caucus last week, is a “trusted leader”.
On Mr Rubio’s website, it reads: “Protecting life defines who we want to be as a society. All life is worthy of protection, and all life enjoys God’s love.
“Marco believes that Roe v. Wade was not only morally wrong, but it was a poorly decided legal precedent and should be overturned.”
Roe v. Wade granted women the constitutional right to have an abortion.
