Patriots player Duron Harmon says he won't visit Trump's White House but would love to meet Obama instead

A New England Patriots player said he will not be going to President Donald Trump’s White House this year to celebrate the team’s Super Bowl victory, but has another idea to commemorate the win.

Duron Harmon, who played safety for the winning team when it beat the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, said he will not join his teammates for the traditional White House visit.

“They don’t want me in the White House,” Mr Harmon told TMZ Sports.

The football player said it “would be dope”, however to meet with former President Barack Obama instead, a political move the NBA’s Golden State Warriors did earlier this year.

“We love you over here, man,” Mr Harmon said, addressing Mr Obama.

Mr Harmon, along with several players, boycotted the White House when the Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2017.

Mr Trump, a fan of the Patriots, has quite a notorious friendship with quarterback Tom Brady, head coach Bill Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft.

“People love to come to the White House,” Mr Trump told CBS News on Sunday. “So the Patriots were here two years ago, and I’m sure they’ll be back.”

Last year, Mr Trump disinvited the Philadelphia Eagles, who won that 2018’s Super Bowl championships, citing that the team “disagree with their president” over whether or not NFL players should be required to stand for the national anthem.

The president also disinvited the Golden State Warriors in 2017, after they won the NBA Championships, after point guard Stephen Curry said he would not want to visit the White House.
