Donald Trump claims Republican senators held him a 'love fest with standing ovations'

The President's comments came after intense criticism from some Republican senators

Donald Trump has claimed that Republican senators set up a "love fest" for him, where he was greeted with "standing ovations".

The President's early-morning comments on Twitter came just a day after two GOP senators, Jeff Flake and Bob Corker, launched stinging attacks on his leadership.

Mr Trump said: "The meeting with Republican Senators yesterday, outside of Flake and Corker, was a love fest with standing ovations and great ideas for USA!"

Both Mr Corker and Mr Flake publicly criticised the president, with the latter saying that he had "children and grandchildren to answer to" and committing not to seek re-election next year.

Mr Corker has been a longtime opponent of Mr Trump, with the two regularly tweeting about each other. The President has claimed that his opponent's feelings stem from that fact that he refused to endorse him in an election, and that he is "now is only negative on anything Trump".

That comment was just one of a run of tweets in which the President attacked his opponents. He said that both had ruled out standing for election not because they opposed Mr Trump but because "they had zero chance of being elected".

"Now act so hurt & wounded!" he added in another tweet.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders dismissed the two senators' actions as “petty” and said their decisions to step down next year were “probably the right” ones.
