A congressman was mocked for saying his crying wife had a premonition that “federal squads” were coming to seize their food and water.

Louisiana Republican Clay Higgins wrote in a bizarre Twitter post that his wife Becca had “the gift” and predicted the government home invasion in a dream

“My wife has the gift of premonition,” he tweeted.

“Last night she dreamed that Federal squads were in our home seizing guns, knives, ‘unauthorised foods’ and stored water. They said we had been ‘reported.’

“Becca awoke crying.

“‘What happened to our freedom?’ she asked. What indeed.”

Representative Higgins is currently running for his third term as congressman.

He also sits on the House Homeland Security Committee and receives classified intelligence briefings as a member of Congress.

Last month be was one of only five members of congress to vote against a resolution reaffirming their commitment to a peaceful transfer of power, as required by the US constitution.

Mr Higgins courted controversy when he threatened on Facebook to shoot any member of a black militia that showed up in Louisiana following the Breonna Taylor grand jury.

Ted Lieu, a congressman from California, took to Twitter and said: “I’m retweeting this without comment. Curious what people make of this post from a sitting Member of Congress.”

In 2017 Mr Higgins was forced to apologise for a video he shot at Auschwitz comparing the threats posed by Jews during the holocaust to those faced by Americans.
