From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. As Joe Biden and Kamala Harris attended a small 9/11 memorial service in Pennsylvania, one onlooker had less respectful ideas.
Among the crowd of 200 people in Shanksville, an unidentified man wore a bright red T-shirt which read “#Kommy Kamala SUCKS at all her jobs. Willie Brown said #Hawktuah Harris also swallows.”
The vulgar and sexist message is a reference to unsubstantiated rumors that Harris’s ascension to California Attorney General was correlated to her romantic relationships. The second part of the shirt, “Hawktuah” is a reference to oral sex.
When asked by a pool reporter why he had attended the service, the man said he had come to the ceremony to honor the victims of Flight 93 and to “make sure Biden and Harris get this message.”
The back of the shirt said “Abort Hawktuah Harris.”
Forty passengers and crew were killed when United Flight 93 went down during the coordinated attack on September 11 2001. Passengers had attempted to wrestle back control of the aircraft from four terrorist hijackers.
Four people were spotted at the Shanksville service wearing Trump hats in the audience, but no Harris or Biden apparel was seen. Aside from those individuals the event remained apolitical.
Earlier that day the president and vice president had set aside political differences, appearing alongside Donald Trump at a service in New York City. Harris and Trump were seen shaking hands.
The civil moment came less than 12 hours after the pair clashed on the debate stage for the first time in Philadelphia.
The Independent has reached out the Trump/ Vance campaign for comment about the man in Shanskville.
