US police officer repeatedly stabbed as he stops homeless man setting petrol station on fire
Video has been released of the incident that occurred in 2013, which officer Mario Gutierrez survived after shooting his attacker
Video has been released of the moment a US police officer was stabbed multiple times after trying to stop a homeless man set fire to a petrol station.
The 54-year-old officer, Mario Gutierrez, survived the 2013 attack with stab wounds to his back, chest, arm and leg.
His attacker, 51-year-old Dominique Jean, was shot after the film ends.
Jean can be seen at the start of the video attempting to drag a petrol hose towards the center of the service station's concourse.
Once officer Gutierrez arrives on the scene, Jean grabs an 8-inch knife and screwdriver before setting upon him.
Having survived the attack, officer Gutierrez remembered little of the incident before seeing the video.
"Eighty percent of what I saw in the video, I don't remember," he told NBC News. "It was an opportunity to find closure to all these blanks, things I had in my mind."
Once recovered and back at work, the officer was awarded the Law Enforcement Congressional Badge of Bravery in April this year.
