Donald Trump mocks Joe Biden for not wearing a mask

Donald Trump, who has avoided wearing masks in public amid the coronavirus pandemic, mocked his Democratic opponent for being “a man who likes a mask”.

Speaking in front of hundreds of supporters packed into an airport hangar in Pennsylvania on Thursday, the US president’s comments came as he appeared to abuse state coronavirus restrictions on outdoor events of more than 250 people.

Many attendees at the Trump campaign event were seen without face coverings or social distancing in place, despite the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention recommending mask use in public.

His White House press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, meanwhile tweeted a picture showing an overflow crowd that was similarly packed-out.

In an attack that saw Mr Trump play to his base, he asked the crowd: “Did you ever see a man who likes a mask as much as him?”

“It gives him a feeling of security”, added the president, as some people laughed in the audience.

“If I were a psychiatrist, right, you know I’d say, ‘This guy’s got some big issues.’ Hanging down. Hanging down,” he added.

Those remarks come despite an ongoing pandemic that has claimed the lives of more than 185,000 Americans and infected more than six million.

Still, Mr Trump has been flouting both local restrictions and his own administration’s guidelines as he insists on campaigning in front of large crowds ahead of the presidential election.

He told the crowd that he is “all for” wearing masks, social distancing, “and all of that stuff”, as he urged them to be careful during the upcoming Labour Day weekend
