From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Your support makes all the difference.Rudy Giuliani says he is "en route" to Pennsylvania with a legal team to challenge election results in the key battleground state.
On Tuesday afternoon, Donald Trump's lawyer took to Twitter to allege "massive cheating" in the state, falsely claiming that Democrats are trying to "steal" the 2020 presidential election.
"En route to Philadelphia with legal team. Massive cheating," Mr Giuliani tweeted. "@realDonaldTrump up by 550,000 with 75% counted. Will not let Philly Democrat hacks steal it!"
Meanwhile, Mr Trump's campaign has announced it will host a press conference in Philadelphia at 3.30pm ET on Wednesday. The president's son and daughter-in-law Eric Trump and Lara Trump will reportedly be on hand for the press conference, as will former Trump campaign advisor Pam Bondi and former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.
According to CNN correspondent Kaitlan Collins, senior Trump campaign officials announced the press conference on a call with reporters but did not take any questions.
Election officials in Pennsylvania — a state that could be crucial in determining whether Mr Trump or former vice president Joe Biden will win the presidency — have said the ballot counts in some areas won't be finished until Wednesday because of the state's new mail-in voting law. Pennsylvania is one of the few states where officials had to wait until election day to begin counting absentee ballots, which has led to delays in the counting process.
On Wednesday morning, governor Tom Wolf cautioned Pennsylvanians that the full results may take several days.
"We may not know the results today, but it's important that we have accurate results," Mr Wolf wrote on Twitter. “Make no mistake: our democracy is being tested in this election. I'll do everything in my power to ensure that the results are fair and that EVERY VOTE is counted."
He added, "Pennsylvania will have a fair election free of outside influences, and we will vigorously defend any attempt to attack the vote."
