Donald Trump is projected to win the battleground state of Ohio, an important victory for the president on his path to keep the White House.

Ohio has been a key battleground state in most presidential elections, and no Republican presidential candidate has won the presidency in recent elections without the state.

The Associated Press projected the president would win Ohio on Tuesday night, a state he also won in the 2016 presidential election.

Democratic challenger Joe Biden led in the early returns of Ohio ballots on Tuesday night, but the votes flipped in favour of Mr Trump as more ballots were counted.

In the weeks leading up to the election, Mr Trump made multiple trips to the Buckeye State in an effort to shore up the important 18 electoral votes. He reminded rally attendees that he won the state in 2016 by a 9-point margin, something the president wanted to do again this time around.

But Mr Biden made gains among independents and white suburban voters, which helped him come into play in the state.

Not all the votes are currently counted, but Mr Trump’s lead over the former vice president influenced the AP to call the race.  Current projections from the New York Times have the president again winning by an 8-point margin.

Ohio has long been an important state for candidates to pick up in their bid for the White House.

No presidential candidate has won the presidency and lost Ohio since 1964.

Mr Trump winning Ohio brings him 18 electoral votes closer to the 270 needed in order to win a second term as president.
