From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama joined the ranks of dignitaries congratulating the Biden-Harris ticket on their presidential victory Saturday morning.
Ms Obama also added that, “I’m beyond thrilled that my friend Joe Biden and our first Black and Indian-American woman Vice President, Kamala Harris, are headed to restore some dignity, competence, and heart at the White House. Our country sorely needs it."
She also cautioned that that election wasn’t the end of the road.
“Let’s remember that tens of millions of people voted for the status quo, even when it meant supporting lies, hate, chaos, and division,” Ms Obama said as part of a Twitter thread. “We’ve got a lot of work to do to reach out to these folks in the years ahead and connect with them on what unites us.”
Earlier in the day, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau extended his well wishes too, telling president-elect Joe Biden he was excited to work on the “world’s greatest challenges.”
