At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. While Ashil Babbit, 35, was shot and killed during the riots, three others died from “medical emergencies”.
Metro City Police Department confirmed that 50-year-old Benjamin Phillips, of Ringtown Pennsylvania, Kevin Greeson, 55, of Athens Alabama and Rosanne Boylan, 34, of Kennesaw Georgia all died during the chaos.
Metro police chief Robert Contee said they are actively investigating the death of Ms Babbit, from Huntington, Maryland, who was shot by a Capitol Police officer. The officer has been placed on leave pending the investigation.
Ms Babbit, a 14-year veteran of the US air force, was seen being hit by a bullet as she joined a group of rioters attempting to break into the legislative complex via a broken window in a video that went viral on Twitter overnight. She was treated at the scene before dying of her injuries in hospital.
Local San Diego news organisation KUSI spoke with the deceased woman’s husband, Aaron Babbit, who confirmed her identity and described her as “a great patriot to all who knew her”.
Asked whether the three who died of medical emergencies were part of the storming of the capitol, Mr Contee said he couldn’t specify if the three were actively part of the riots or entered the building.
“There were a lot of people on the grounds of the Captiol yesterday and I guess the extent that we can say right now is that they were on the grounds of the Capitol when they experienced their medical emergencies,” Mr Contee said.
A stabbing outside Trump International Hotel on the corner of 12th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, as well as two separate shootings in the city after the 6 pm curfew, was not related to the unrest in the city, Mr Contee said.
Capitol Police chief Steven Sund said the police officer who shot a Trump supporter has been placed on leave pending investigation and had their police powers have been suspended pending the outcome of a joint Metropolitan Police and US Capitol Police investigation.
“As per the USCP’s policy, the USCP employee has been placed on administrative leave,” Mr Sund said.
One of the men who died from a medical emergency, Mr Greeson, had a limited social media presence, according to AL.com, which says he last posted between July and September about and hydroxychloroquine as a cure for Covid and “Trump 2020! MAGA”.
