From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris updated their Twitter bios with their new titles, having emerged on top in the 2020 presidential race.

The pair changed their Twitter profiles to say “president elect” and “vice president elect” shortly after the Associated Press (AP) and other news outlets called Pennsylvania — and the presidency — for the Democratic presidential ticket on Saturday.

It followed their projected win in Pennsylvania, where votes continued to be counted for more than three days following Tuesday’s election.

Mr Biden, who became president elect, was reported to have amassed a 34,243-vote lead over Donald Trump, who the AP said was unable to overtake his opponent.

Mr Biden needed one more state to surpass the 270 electoral college votes necessary to claim victory against Mr Trump, prior to the Pennsylvania call.

The Democrat celebrated with Ms Harris, who became vice president elect, on a phone call as news broke that they had won.

“We did it. We did it Joe. You’re going to be the next president of the United States,” she told the president elect, in a video shared to Twitter.

Mr Biden, meanwhile, wrote on Twitter that he was “honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country".

“The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a president for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not,” he added. “I will keep the faith that you have placed in me.”

Ms Harris, who wrote on Twitter that she was ready to “get started”, will also become the first female vice president, as well as the first Black and first Asian American vice president.
