Two radio journalists were shot dead in the Dominican Republic while one of them was reading the news on a Facebook Live broadcast.

Police said three men have been detained following the shooting in San Pedro de Macoris, east of the capital of Santo Domingo.

Gunfire interrupts the Facebook Live video, before a woman is heard shouting "shots, shots, shots."

The transmission then cuts off.

The victims were identified as producer and director Leo Martinez and announcer Luis Manuel Medina at radio station 103.5 HICC.

Mr Medina was also the official announcer for the Estrellas Orientales baseball team.

The journalists had previously spoken out against pollution in Laguna Mallen, a protected area in San Pedro.

Police said a secretary was also injured and is undergoing surgery.

The arrested man have not yet been charged. Police said they do not yet have a motive for the killings.

In 2015, two US journalists were killed during a live TV broadcast in Virginia, before the gunman shot himself.
