From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Watch live from Philadelphia as pro-Palestinian protesters are expected to gather ahead of the presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

Tuesday night (10 September) marks the only scheduled debate of the US presidential campaign, and it will be a key moment in a close-fought contest.

Ms Harris and Mr Trump go head-to-head in a clash that begins at 9pm ET, just eight weeks before the 5 November election and days before early voting will start in some states.

Former President Trump said he would contrast the left-wing policies Ms Harris proposed in her failed 2020 presidential bid with the more centrist positions she has staked out now.

“You don’t know what to expect. She’s changed all of her policies over the years,” he told NBC News in a phone interview ahead of the debate.

Ms Harris, meanwhile, indicated she will draw attention to Mr Trump’s habit of lying.

“Donald Trump has a real problem with the truth,” she wrote in a social media post Tuesday morning.

The war in Gaza, which sparked protests across US college campuses and wider society in recent months, is a topic that could be discussed by the pair.
