A man has been arrested after allegedly exchanging gunfire with police and shouting about Donald Trump at a Florida golf resort owned by the US president.

Police were called to reports of “shots fired” at Trump National Doral resort, near Miami, in the early hours of Friday morning.

The Doral Police department said in their initial statement that there were “no known victims” and “no further threat”.

Police were notified of an “active shooter” at about 1.30am, Doral police chief Hernan Organvidez later told reporters.

He said officers from the Doral and Miami-Dade forces confronted him immediately and exchanged gunfire with the man who was “neutralised” and taken into custody.

Miami-Dade police director Juan Perez said the man was shouting about Mr Trump, and “actively shooting.”

“He was yelling and spewing some information about President Trump and that’s what we know so far. And he had an American flag that he did drape over the counter,” Perez said.

Mr Perez said a Doral officer received an unspecified injury.

“You know, these officers did not hesitate one second to engage this individual that was actively shooting in the lobby of the hotel,” he said. “They risked their lives knowing that that they had to get in there to save lives in that hotel.”

Mr Perez said the Secret Service was also present and that the FBI had been called in.

Trump National Doral Golf Club, an 800-acre resort outside Miami, is home to four championship golf courses including the Blue Monster, which plays host to a PGA Tour event each year.

Mr Trump bought the property for $150m (£111m) in 2012.
