An impaired driver on a "joy ride" blasted through a barrier set up at Admiral and Grand boulevards in downtown Kansas City, Missouri after 8am on Wednesday.
A brief chase followed, with several police cars boxing in the sedan as it cruised south along the route, turning at Pershing Road, hopping a median and swerving dangerously close to the barricades where hundreds of people in the crowd looked on.
According to police, Clay County Sheriff's deputies used tyre-deflating Stop Sticks to slow the car, and its side-view mirror was hanging by its side.
Police rammed the sedan, sending it into a spin and forcing it to a stop on a median as smoke billowed from the tyres. A tow truck removed it from the street.
Kansas City Police Department Sergeant Jake Becchina said two people were arrested following the chase. Police are investigating whether the driver was impaired.
There are no reported injuries, and police don't suspect terrorist activity.
Chiefs fans filled the streets to celebrate the team's first Super Bowl win in 50 years following its victory against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas praised police for the quick response, allowing the parade to proceed as scheduled, and blamed the incident on an impaired driver on a "joy ride".
